Heritage Studies And Significance Assessments
From miner’s cottages to mullock heaps, heritage is all around us – identifying and documenting heritage places reveals our living history.
Heritage sites – usually buildings, places and trees, are identified by heritage consultants at the request of local councils and shires. They are added to the Victorian Heritage Register as significant cultural heritage resources because they are deemed significant places worthy of protection from destruction or demolition.
Commissioned heritage studies include Thematic Environmental Histories (TEH), Heritage Studies and Conservation Management Plans. Thematic Environmental Histories connect the municipality ’s past with what is left on the ground in the 21st century in order to understand the themes that shaped the Shire. Heritage studies of sites and precincts inform heritage and planning policy.
In collaboration with Context Pty Ltd, Hindsight has been engaged since 2005 as consultant historian with the Murrindindi Shire. This commission delivered the Draft Thematic Environmental History as Stage 1 of that Shire’s Heritage Study in 2006. In 2007-08, subsequent stages of this study resulted in the completion of individual histories of 135 residential and public properties and four heritage precincts (Alexandra, Yea and Yarck) within the Shire. The significance of researching, photographing and recording the history of these properties was highlighted when some of the properties were destroyed during the Black Saturday Bushfires on 7 February 2009.
Prior to establishing Hindsight Consulting Historians, Fay Woodhouse was Senior Historian at heritage consultants, Allom Lovell & Associates (now Lovell Chen) from 2001-2005. She has completed the following Heritage Studies:
